Living At Home Park Rapids Area Volunteer at work

Living at Home of the Park Rapids Area began serving clients in 1992 under the 501(c)(3) of Mahube Community Council. In 2000 there was a revamping of the program and a Board of Directors, Articles of Incorporation, 501(c)(3), By-Laws and policies and procedures were established. As a stand-alone agency, no longer under the auspices of Mahube, the program became its own entity with new volunteers and new care receivers.

Led by its mission to mobilize volunteers and other community resources to enable seniors to remain living in the home of their choice, Living at Home offered (and continues to offer) services for seniors ranging from handyman services to grocery shopping to medical escort to respite care.

Living at Home’s original service area included the Park Rapids School District. As requests for services came in from the Nevis area, the Nevis School District was added in 2001. In 2005, the service area expanded to include the Akeley area.

In 2001, the Program applied for and received a Faith in Action Grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for $35,000 and was able to hire a Volunteer Coordinator. As part of the Interfaith Caregivers Program we partner with coalition congregations who provide a source of volunteers and financial support.

Men from First Lutheran Church of Akeley and First English Lutheran of Dorset formed our first ramp-building crews in the summer of 2005. Aided by funding through a grant from the Department of Human Services, reimbursement was provided for coordination time and mileage.

In 2005, funding for the Caregiver Respite Program was provided by Older American Act dollars through the Dancing Sky AAA. That year we formed a Caregiver Discussion Group with a Licensed Social Worker as facilitator. Annually, Living at Home provides services for over 175 seniors in southern Hubbard and eastern Becker counties.

Originally under the fiscal agent Elderberry Institute, in 2010, Park Rapids Living at Home/Block Nurse Program joined the other base funded programs to create a new fiscal entity, The Living at Home Network. While continuing as a member of the Living at Home Network we officially changed our name in 2012 to what it is today: Living at Home of the Park Rapids Area.
